Safer
Wherever SPECS cameras are installed, casualties reduce. This reduction is seen along the entire monitored section, not just at a camera location, as you would see with a ‘spot speed’ camera. This is true within roadworks too, where construction sites have actually shown lower casualty levels during the works when compared with prior periods. Get In Touch
Smoother
SPECS cameras result in drivers travelling at a steady, moderated rate. This reduces the ‘speed variability’ seen with stop/start behaviour and that in turn results in improved journey reliability. This is particularly beneficial within roadworks, because when vehicles travel at a steady rate, it significantly reduces the risk of a collision and the associated injuries – this was quickly recognised as a benefit in TASCAR, leading to longer works areas that continued to flow. Greener
When travelling at a moderated speed with little accelerating or braking, vehicles burn less fuel, emit fewer emissions, make less road noise and reduce the wear on the road surface. Recent trials have demonstrated that air quality significantly improves, with a 50% reduction in NO2 levels reported, which is particularly beneficial in areas where stop/start HGV traffic within roadworks could potentially lead to a decrease in air quality. Fairer
The travelling public are clear that they consider SPECS cameras to be fairer than ‘spot speed’, with the system providing a natural amount of leeway, rather than suddenly capturing a vehicle at one specific location. The number of tickets issued in a SPECS system is typically around 1/10th the number seen from ‘spot speed’, despite covering a much longer section of carriageway, and with the huge number of vehicles that travel through a motorway roadworks scheme, this helps to maintain public acceptance. Data & Reporting
This ‘speed profile’ chart shows the vehicle speeds for all journeys monitored through a SPECS TASCAR scheme. It clearly shows that the vast majority of vehicles are travelling at or around the posted speed limit, ensuring the safe and steady flow of traffic. Very few vehicles are above 55mph or below 40mph, which demonstrates a very small variation in speed – this is proven to result in better flows of traffic, preventing stop/start behaviour, delivering more reliable journey times and increasing safety.
